Mpox A Comprehensive Guide For Prevention And Recovery

Mpox: A Comprehensive Guide for Prevention and Recovery

What is Mpox?

Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, is a disease caused by the monkeypox virus (MPXV), an enveloped double-stranded DNA virus.

It is less severe than smallpox but shares similar symptoms.

Understanding the Virus

Transmission

MPXV is primarily transmitted through close contact with infected individuals, animals, or their bodily fluids.

Symptoms

Mpox often begins with flu-like symptoms such as:

  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Muscle aches

A characteristic rash typically develops within a few days, starting on the face and spreading to other parts of the body.

Prevention and Risk Reduction

Personal Protective Measures

  • Avoid contact with individuals suspected of having mpox.
  • If contact occurs, wear gloves, masks, and eye protection.
  • Wash your hands frequently with soap and water or use hand sanitizer.

Social Gathering Considerations

  • Limit attendance at large gatherings where close contact is unavoidable.
  • Maintain physical distance of at least 3 feet from others.
  • Wear a mask if possible, especially in crowded indoor spaces.

Recovery and Self-Care

  • Isolate yourself to prevent virus spread.
  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids.
  • Use over-the-counter pain relievers for discomfort.

Role of the World Health Organization (WHO)

The WHO monitors the global mpox outbreak and provides guidance to countries on containment measures.

The virus's spread prompted the WHO to declare it a public health emergency of international concern in July 2022.
